Reclaiming the power of the voice
Healing the witch wound
As women, we carry deep ancestral memories, stories etched into our cells of both strength and suppression. It has been a theme of my life, being an extremely shy child, and hiding behind my Mum’s skirt. From not asking for what I need or desire, to reclaiming the power of the voice as a teenager. The pattern has continued to come and go throughout my life. It takes deep reflection, self-awareness and honesty with yourself to see your own patterns. Plus a whole lot of courage, passion and trust in yourself to reclaiming the power of the voice.
In our Being a Woman podcast, Sonya and I explore these threads of feminine experience: the laughter, the tears, the silence, and the rediscovery of our voices. One of the deepest collective wounds we speak to is the witch wound, the fear of being seen, of being powerful, and of being too much.
For generations, women who spoke their truth, trusted their intuition, or embodied their magic were silenced, through fear, shame, or persecution. This ancient pain lives in our collective memory as a subconscious fear of being judged, rejected, or punished for expressing our power.
The Silencing of Truth
Women were once the wise ones — healers, midwives, herbalists, and seers. When patriarchal systems rose, this wisdom was branded dangerous. Speaking truth became risky. Today, we still carry echoes of that fear in the ways we hold back our voices — staying quiet to keep the peace or doubting our inner knowing.
The Fear of Visibility
Historically, being seen could mean danger. Many women learned that safety came from blending in. This pattern continues when we downplay our gifts, avoid being “too much,” or shrink our light to make others comfortable. Healing begins when we choose visibility over invisibility, when we allow our authentic selves to be witnessed.
The Disconnection from Power
The witch wound separated women from their innate power, from nature, intuition, and spiritual authority. To heal, we must reconnect to these sacred roots. Practice listening to your intuition, honour your body’s wisdom, and gather in a safe community with other women who are reclaiming their magic.
When we speak, share, and shine, even when our voice trembles, we rewrite history. Healing the witch wound isn’t just personal; it’s ancestral. Every time a woman chooses authenticity over fear, she heals generations before her and empowers those yet to come.
Reflection Prompts
Where in my life do I silence myself to avoid conflict, rejection, or being misunderstood?
What parts of my authentic self have I hidden to feel safe or accepted, and what would it feel like to let them be seen?
How can I reconnect with my intuitive power this week, through ritual, creativity, or self-expression?
As we explore these themes in Being a Woman, may you feel the courage to reclaim the parts of yourself that have been silenced for too long. Together, we are remembering, not only who we are, but who we’ve always been.
