Finding balance through burnout
I’ve been burnt out with the flu the last three weeks, it has not been fun. But it did give me something I didn’t realise I desperately needed: time and balance. Time to truly relax, reset, and renew my life goals with genuine passion again. Finding my balance through burnout.
It made me ask all the big questions: Why me? What am I doing with my life?
I felt like a bit of a loser for even feeling that way — after all, it was “just” the flu. I didn’t have a chronic illness, cancer, or a life-threatening disease. But three weeks out of action took its toll, physically and emotionally.
The truth of my illness showed me that I was focusing too much on work and forgetting to enjoy the little things. Illness and injury show up for a reason — they arrive as messengers, pointing us toward a higher truth. So I asked myself: What is this trying to show me? What is missing from my life? What am I gaining from being this way?
And what I realised was simple but powerful: I was pushing too hard.
I love my work, and I love my life, but I wasn’t giving myself the rest I needed to truly sustain myself. I needed space to focus on my family, to engage with my creative, feminine energy. To draw, to paint, to play guitar, to surf, to be near the ocean — to just be Toni.
This week, I’ve been on holidays with my family, and it’s been everything my soul needed. No schedules, no deadlines — just connection, laughter, and moments that fill me back up.
I can see the pattern now. The only other time I had a major injury was six months after my dad died, when I broke my ankle. I had been so focused on work again, not allowing myself to grieve or feel. That break was literally the break I needed. I cried, and cried, and cried — and then I felt lighter. Clearer. More me.
It seems every winter I get the same reminder, either feeling low or getting sick. I thought I was handling things well this year… but alas, the flu knocked me flat.
Finding balance through burnout, that’s what it always comes back to.
I’m so used to feeling good, to being in alignment, that when I lose that balance, everything feels off.
Balance between work, rest, and play.
We don’t always get it right, and it doesn’t have to be perfect. But nurturing all three is what keeps us whole.
Work — achievement, stimulation, purpose, and contribution.
Rest — sleep, stillness, space to breathe and reconnect.
Play — joy, creativity, laughter, and presence.
When one of these is missing, life feels heavier.
When all three are honoured, life feels alive again.
3 Simple Ways to Find Balance
Listen to your body before it screams.
Fatigue, tension, or irritation are whispers that something’s out of balance. Don’t wait until your body forces you to stop.
Prioritise rest like it’s sacred.
Rest isn’t laziness — it’s restoration. Schedule downtime, naps, and quiet moments as non-negotiables.
Do something every week just for joy.
Not for productivity, not for outcome — simply because it feels good. Dance, paint, walk by the sea, sing out loud, or watch the sunset.
Illness, injury, grief, burnout — they’re all teachers, if we’re willing to listen. Here’s to balance, to being human, and to remembering that we don’t need to earn rest, we just need to allow it.
