Romancing The Stone
How to Maximise Your Brilliance
"In the gem cutting trade, "romancing the stone" refers to the process and skill of deciding how to cut, shape, and facet a raw gemstone to maximize its brilliance and value"
When you think about romance, what comes to mind?
Epic love scenes, breathtaking landscapes, battles between good and evil, grand gestures, a candlelit dinner for two, or perhaps the little things that make your heart smile?
Lately, I've been thinking about what it means to ‘romance myself’. To me, it's one of the most important ingredients in living a beautiful life.
It's about loving life, loving myself, my choices, my people, my home and my work. It's passion. It's the desire to experience more, to feel more, to be fully alive.
Finding the beauty in each day, each moment and each person. It's getting outside, soaking up the sunshine, immersing myself in art and flowers, and making time for the things that make me feel good, bright and beautiful.
What if the most beautiful love story you ever experience is the one you create with yourself and your life?
Spring has sprung, and I'm making a conscious effort to get out of the house and back into the world, to notice beauty and to immerse myself in it. Not because life is perfect, but because there's so much beauty to be found when we're willing to look. The photo above is from my visit today to the art exhibition - opening soon at the Ex Animo Art Gallery in Hyde Park.
What would it look like for you to romance yourself a little more?
Remember the movie Romancing the Stone? It got me thinking about the precious stones we spend so much time searching for, admiring and protecting.
What if we thought of ourselves as the rare gem? Each of us has a unique brilliance. Our own light, our own gifts, our own way of seeing and experiencing the world. Yet, how often do we spend our time comparing ourselves to others, criticising our imperfections or wishing we were somewhere else, someone else, or further along in life?
Perhaps the question isn't how we become more brilliant, but how we uncover, nurture and maximise the brilliance that's already within us. And like any precious stone, our brilliance isn't defined by a flawless surface. Sometimes it's the pressure we've endured, the experiences we've survived and the lessons we've learnt that give us our depth, character and sparkle.
Of course, there's another side to this journey: recognising the shadows that can dim our light. The fears, limiting beliefs, old wounds and patterns that keep us playing small. Both are part of being human. Both deserve our attention.
Embracing Our Light and Our Darkness
As I've shared before, I often find that my greatest gift is also my greatest challenge. I see the beauty and light in people. I can recognise their potential, their goodness and the brilliance they sometimes struggle to see in themselves.
But my challenge has been to learn, to recognise and accept the darkness, too. Because we all have it. The uncomfortable emotions. The fears. The protective behaviours. The parts of ourselves we'd rather hide or pretend aren't there.
In my work with Hypnotherapy and Reiki, I see the light and feel the darkness. I recognise the beauty of a person's potential, while also understanding that unresolved experiences, beliefs and emotional patterns can stand in the way of them expressing it.
And this is where awareness becomes so powerful.
We cannot change what we're unwilling to acknowledge. We cannot release what we haven't yet recognised. And we cannot fully embrace our brilliance while believing that the difficult parts of ourselves make us unworthy of love.
The invitation isn't to eliminate our darkness or pretend everything is positive. It's to bring compassion and curiosity to the parts of ourselves that need attention, so we can begin to understand, heal and move forward.
This is the heart of my work: helping people reconnect with themselves, find greater calm and confidence, and create space for more of who they truly are.
Discover your brilliance. Take a few quiet moments for yourself this week. Step outside, sit in the sunshine, notice the flowers, or simply take a few slow breaths.
Journaling Prompts for reflection
What is my brilliance?
My unique qualities, gifts, strengths or ways of being make me, me? How do others appreciate me in a way that I might overlook?
What is the challenge within my greatest gift?
Where might my kindness become people-pleasing? My sensitivity become overwhelm? Or my drive become perfectionism? The ability to see the good in others perhaps makes it difficult to acknowledge what isn't good for me?
What beauty am I overlooking in my life right now?
How can I romance myself this week?
What small, beautiful experience could I create just for me? That would bring me pleasure, passion, joy or a sense of aliveness?
Don't just think about your answers. Feel them. Acknowledge what comes up, without judgement. You might discover that your brilliance doesn't need to be created. It simply needs a little more room to shine.
Ready to Uncover Your Brilliance?
Sometimes, we need support to see the patterns, beliefs and emotional baggage that keep us disconnected from ourselves. We need a safe space to explore our shadows, reconnect with our strengths and make choices that reflect who we truly want to be.
Through therapeutic coaching and hypnotherapy, I help you build awareness, work through unhelpful patterns and cultivate greater calm, confidence and self-trust. Reiki offers another way to pause, reconnect and create space for your own sense of balance and wellbeing.
You don't have to wait until you feel broken, burnt out or completely lost to invest in yourself. You can begin because you're ready for more joy, more clarity, more connection and more life. You are the rare gem. Let's uncover your brilliance.
