Feel the Fear, Take the Next Step

“If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change.” Michael Jackson, Man in the Mirror

What is the next step?

I love this idea — that change begins with us. Not with everyone else changing. Not with the world suddenly becoming easier. Not with waiting until we feel ready. With ourselves.
Fear is probably the never-ending battle in my mind — and perhaps in yours too.
It’s that voice that says, What if I fail? What if I get it wrong? What if I’m not ready? What if people judge me? What if I lose something?
And yet, when I really think about it, fear rarely asks us to stop forever. It simply asks us to hesitate before taking the next step. I’ve been reminding myself lately that I don’t need to see the whole path. I only need to see the next step.
Because it’s never really the mountain itself that we have to climb. It’s one step, then another, then another. Unless you’re actually climbing a mountain, of course! So perhaps the question isn’t, How am I ever going to achieve this? Perhaps it’s simply, What is my next step?

Think about something you’ve been wanting to do, change or create.

Maybe you’ve been carrying it around in your mind for months, or even years. You might have lists, plans and good intentions — but ultimately, it is taking that next step that moves you towards the life you desire. And sometimes, the next step is surprisingly small. Fear can be closely connected to what we call the ego — that part of our psyche whose job is, in many ways, to protect us.
The ego wants to keep us safe. It wants certainty, control and belonging. It can become very focused on *me*, What does this mean for me? What will happen to me? What will people think of me? Why is this happening to me? From a therapeutic perspective, these can be important questions to explore, but from a spiritual perspective, there is another question we can ask.

What if I am part of something much greater than myself?

Across many spiritual traditions, we are reminded that we are not separate. We are part of something larger — whether you call that God, universal consciousness, divine love, nature, the interconnectedness of life, or simply the human experience we all share.
We are part of a grand, beautiful and sometimes devastating tapestry of life. And when we remember that, something can begin to shift. From protection to conscious leadership. Your ego isn't the enemy. Fear isn't the enemy either. Fear is often trying to protect you.
A healthy sense of self knows that you matter — while also understanding that other people matter too. An unhealthy ego can become consumed by fear: fear of being insignificant, exposed, rejected, wrong, alone, out of control or unsafe.
But when we begin to move beyond simply surviving and protecting ourselves, our values can expand. We begin to seek peace, joy, freedom, connection, love and harmony. We begin to understand that our wellbeing is connected to the wellbeing of the people and world around us.
This is where conscious leadership of self begins. It is learning to become aware of your thoughts, emotions and energy — and then learning how to consciously work with them rather than allowing fear to run the show.
It is protecting your energy without closing your heart. It is taking responsibility for your own inner world. It is becoming the role model for the change you wish to see in the world. And perhaps most importantly, it is remembering:
Yes, you are important. But so are we. You don't have to change the whole world today. You simply have to take your next step.

Your affirmation

I can feel the fear and do it anyway.
I don't need to wait until I feel completely confident. I don't need to know exactly how everything will unfold. I trust the next step. I feel the fear, and I do it anyway.

Your reflection and journaling prompt

What is stopping me from taking my next step?
If I took that step, what might become possible for me?
Where in my life am I allowing fear to lead me, rather than faith?
What change do I wish to see in the world?
And finally What is one small thing I can do today to embody that change?
