My Grief and My Spiritual Growth

Honouring Our Loved Ones This Halloween

As our home and street fill with Halloween decorations this week, I’ve found myself reflecting deeply on my loved ones who have passed over. I’ve been allowing my grief to be seen and felt, acknowledging how it has shaped my life, my choices, and my spiritual growth.

When I was young, one of my dearest school friends, Kim, had Cystic Fibrosis. We always knew she might not live to adulthood. Her life was filled with hospital stays and challenges most of us could barely imagine, yet she radiated courage and light. Kim even received a double lung transplant and lived to tell the tale! At 28, she passed over. I knew it the moment it happened. I woke with an overwhelming feeling, a knowing, and tears that came before I even received the news.

Just two months later, another dear friend passed, she took her own life. Losing them both so close together broke something open within me. Their lives and deaths changed me. They taught me how grief and spiritual growth are woven together, that through loss, we can find deeper compassion, purpose, and connection with the unseen.

Last October, I was honoured to be a speaker at the Grief Summit, where I shared my personal story and the wisdom that came through those experiences. It was a sacred opportunity to reflect on how grief can open us to higher states of awareness and healing.
