Five Minutes That Could Change Your Holidays
Look Up, My Dears
School holidays are here again; that stretch of days when the pace of life softens, just slightly, and we're offered an invitation most of us are too busy to notice we need. I've been thinking lately about what a "holiday" actually is, and how far we've drifted from where the word began.
Once, to travel was to risk everything. People crossed countries on foot or by ship to trade, to seek a new life, to walk a pilgrimage toward something sacred. It was dangerous. It was uncertain. It was, in every sense, an adventure of the soul as much as the body.
These days, our holidays look rather different. We sit. We read. We pour a glass of something and chat late into the evening with people we love. There's a stillness to it now, even a softness; some might call it gluttony, or slothfulness, if they were feeling harsh. But I don't see it that way at all. I see it as sacred in its own quiet fashion.
Because underneath the lazy mornings and the long lunches, something older is still happening. We are reconnecting; with family, with friends, with the parts of ourselves that the busyness of ordinary life crowds out. We are relaxing the mind, the body, and yes, the soul. And in doing that, we open a door back to the earth, to life itself, to the divine; whatever that word means for you. This is the real gift hiding inside a holiday. Not the destination. Not even the rest. It's the return, to presence, to wonder, to the simple, staggering fact that we are alive.
The magic we forget to notice
I talk often about the beauty of a Reiki session, a retreat, or even five quiet minutes of silence. What makes them powerful isn't the technique. It's the connection; to yourself, to life, to the sheer magnificence of it all. That you exist. That you are here, breathing, on this spinning earth, at this exact moment. That is magic, plain and simple.
I notice it most with my own children. When we travel, they can become so wrapped up in their screens that the world outside simply disappears. And so I find myself saying it again and again: look up, my darlings. Look up at the sky. Marvel at it.
What a beautiful world. What a beautiful life.
Beauty matters enormously to me. It lifts me every time I let it in. I believe Source, God, the Universe; whatever name feels true to you, created this astonishing world precisely so we would stop, and look, and stand in awe of it. And when we let ourselves feel that awe, something shifts. The mind softens. The heart opens. We rise, quite literally, into a higher frequency. It really can be that simple. Marvel. That's the whole practice.
Five minutes that change everything
When I coach people in consciously leading themselves, I often suggest something small: just five minutes a day of meditation, or simply silence. People smile politely and nod, I can see them thinking sure, Toni, that sounds nice. But the ones who actually try it come back changed. Not eventually, often within days. They tell me, with real conviction in their voice, that life feels calmer. More peaceful. More connected, to themselves, to the people around them, to the earth beneath them and the sky above. To the divine, however they understand it.
So here is what I want to ask you, this holiday season, whether you're travelling far or simply staying home with the washing and the wonderful chaos of kids underfoot: What would it be like if you felt calmer, and more connected — starting today?
A Moment for Reflection
Find a few quiet minutes, on the verandah, in the car before you go in, in bed before sleep. Let yourself sit with these questions, and see what rises:
- When was the last time I truly looked up — at the sky, at beauty, at the wonder of simply being alive?
- If I gave myself five minutes of silence each day this holiday, what might I notice changing by the end of the week?
- Who or what am I longing to reconnect with right now — a person, a place, a part of myself?
- What would it feel like in my body if I moved through these holidays from a place of calm and connection, rather than busyness?
There's no right answer here. Just notice what comes. That noticing is the beginning of the shift.
Come Home to Yourself
If this stirred something in you, a longing for more stillness, more connection, more of that quiet, sacred wonder; I'd love to hold space for you to explore it further. Whether it's a Reiki session to help you exhale and reconnect, a hypnotherapy session to quiet the noise of the mind, or a place in an upcoming women's circle or retreat, know that there is a doorway open for you whenever you're ready to walk through it. You don't need a pilgrimage across a continent to find your way back to yourself. Sometimes, all it takes is five minutes of silence, and the willingness to look up.
Peace and love, Toni xx
