Trust Yourself: Taking Back the Leash
Have you ever noticed how quickly fear can take over - learn to trust yourself.
One moment you're feeling inspired. You have an idea, a dream, a knowing, a desire to try something new. Perhaps you're thinking about setting a boundary, changing direction, speaking your truth, or finally saying yes to something your heart has been calling you toward.
Then suddenly, fear arrives. Your mind starts racing.
What if it doesn't work? What if I get it wrong?
What if people don't understand? What if I fail?
I often think of our nervous system as a loyal guard dog.
A guard dog has an important role. It watches for danger. It alerts us when something needs our attention. It wants to keep us safe, but sometimes it becomes a little overenthusiastic. It hears a noise in the distance and assumes there's a threat. Its ears prick up. Its hackles rise. It starts barking, convinced that danger is just around the corner. Our nervous system can be like that too.
I grew up with a German Shepherd, a beautiful boy who was both soft and gentle, yet deeply protective and fierce when he needed to be. I have loved dogs ever since. There is something so honest about them… so loyal, so attuned, so devoted. The presence of a trusted companion is not something to be taken lightly, it shapes how we understand safety, connection, and trust.
The thing is, the guard dog isn't trying to sabotage you. It's trying to protect you.
It simply doesn't always know the difference between a genuine threat and the discomfort of growth.
To the nervous system, starting a new business, having a difficult conversation, putting yourself out there, following a dream, or making a big life change can feel just as threatening as physical danger. And so it sounds the alarm. The mistake many of us make is believing that because fear is loud, it must be right.
But fear is not wisdom. Fear is information.
Wisdom is what you do with that information. Over the years, I've learned that when I'm making important decisions, I don't follow fear. I listen to it. I thank it for trying to keep me safe. But I don't hand it the leash.
Instead, I come back to myself. I come back to that deeper place within me—the quiet voice beneath the noise, beneath the stories, beneath the worries about what might happen. The place where intuition lives. Intuition rarely shouts. It doesn't catastrophise. It doesn't create endless worst-case scenarios. It simply knows. It feels steady. Grounded. True.
When we trust ourselves, we stop asking fear to make our decisions.
We recognise that our nervous system works for us, not the other way around.
We remember that we are the ones holding the leash. We are the commander of our body. We are the master of our destiny. Our choices create the path beneath our feet. Not fate. Not fear. Not the expectations of others.
Choice. Moment by moment. Step by step. You have free will. You have inner wisdom. You have a lifetime of experience that has shaped who you are. And you have the capacity to choose again whenever life asks you to.
So if your guard dog starts barking this week, don't panic. Pause. Place a hand on your heart. Take a breath. Thank it for trying to protect you. Then gently take back the leash. And ask yourself:
What would my inner wisdom choose? What feels true for me? What is the next aligned step? Then trust yourself enough to take it.
A Simple Emergency Breath Practice
When you notice your nervous system becoming activated; rub your palms together and bring your awareness into your body. Take a slow breath in through your nose for a count of 4. Breathe out gently for a count of 6.
Repeat three times, silently saying:
I am safe.
There is no emergency.
What is my next best step?
Then take that step. Not the whole journey. Just the next step. Because trust isn't built by knowing everything in advance. Trust is built by listening, choosing, and discovering that you can rely on yourself along the way.
